How to Prepare Malai Prawns?- Viji’s Food Recipes


Fresh Medium Prawns – 1/2 kg, Shelled and deveined ;  Juice of half a lime; 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder ; 1/2 tsp. salt.

For Gravy:

1/2 cup curds, well mixed ; milk of 1/2 fresh coconut ; 1 tsp. cumminseeds; large piece ginger; 1 medium onion ; 2 red chillies; 2 bay leaves; 1 tsp sugar; salt to taste; 1/2 tsp. turmeric; 3 tbsps. oil.

Garam Masala:

2.54 cm stick cinnamon; 3 green cardamoms; 2 cloves. Grind to a paste.


Grind onion, cumminseeds, ginger and red chillies to a very fine paste.

Heat oil. Fry prawns quickly till they just turn golden. Drain. In the same oil fry ground paste, bay leaves, turmeric powder and salt with a sprinkling of water till brown. Add curds, ground garam masala, sugar, coconut milk and simmer for four to five minutes. Now add fried prawns and simmer covered for five to seven minutes or till well blended and gravy is creamy in consistency. Goes well with plain boiled rice.
